Whether you believe a cover version to be an appreciation of another artists work, a lazy copycatting or an attempt at artistic creativity there’s one thing we can all agree on. Some cover versions are actually better than the originals and much more memorable. Think Amy Winehouse’s take on Valerie or to a lesser extent Ellie Goulding’s remake of Elton John’s, Your Song.
Sounding like I broken record, I can often be heard saying that music is subjective – and that’s the best thing about it. But I’m going to skip that today and talk about a far deeper point. Is it possible for another artist to actually feel the song more, have a greater connection with the words and in turn produce a better song than one that was written by someone else, years previous?
