Today is 35 years since the great American-born Greek soprano Maria Callas died. Maria Callas is one the most legendary opera singers ever. Legendary voice. Legendary persona. Legendary life.
Callas and Pavarotti didn’t sing together on stage or on record, and I’m pretty sure they didn’t meet either. However, the record company EMI had in fact concrete plans to couple them in a recording of the Donizetti opera Lucia di Lammermoor. Unfortunately that didn’t happen. No use in crying, but I’m sure it would have been great!
As we know, the great Australian soprano Dame Joan Sutherland became Pavarotti’s Lucia on stage and on record. The first video is Sutherland and Pavarotti in the duet “Verranno a te”. The second video (audio only) is Maria Callas and the great Italian tenor Giuseppe Di Stefano singing the same aria.
Enjoy, compare, then enjoy some more!
