A classic noir set-up, executed by a master director and great actors? What’s not to love?

Edward G. Robinson plays Professor Richard Wanley, a faculty member in the psychology department at fictional Gotham College (we’re introduced to him teaching a course on the psychology of homicide). After sending his wife and kids off on vacation, Wanley waits for his friend to meet him for dinner when a woman’s portrait catches his eye in a shop window. Wanley returns to the painting after dinner and the titular model, Alice Reed (Joan Bennett) approaches him. She likes watching men admire her portrait and invites Wanley to go out for drinks. He agrees to join her against his better judgment and later to her apartment for more drinks and looking at sketches, again after a half-hearted debate with himself (Wanley debates with himself quite a bit in this movie).
