At one point in horror history, the genre switched gears to billing directors instead of cast. Names like Craven, Carpenter and Cronenberg were tossed around instead of names like Lee, Karloff, or Cushing. Nowadays concepts and gimmicks reign king instead of the talent behind them, making the masters of horror fade off into existence. There is a chance with some of the upcoming indie horror directors like Ti West and Adam Wingard that we’ll have an new era of big named horror directors, but it’s too early to tell. For the meantime, it’s not like the filmographies of our horror favorites have disappeared. They’re there for us to re-watch and reanalyze time and time again. One such film I recently popped in for a revisit is Tobe Hooper’s naked space vampire extravaganza Lifeforce.
