TWO very different women, yet very similar in the power they wielded over men. That’s the story of actress Marilyn Monroe in My Week with Marilyn and of ex-British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. Added to that, doses of feminine charm.
The success of both films lies in their not attempting to be a tell-all epic of the lives of the women – which is a very tempting thing to do. The story develops from a specific focus without becoming overly self-indulgent. In the case of Monroe, there had been one too many productions about her that were strangely familiar, similar and largely exaggerated. In the case of Thatcher, it would be a task to make history entertaining yet come across as credible.
