hostage media: Roméo Langlois in Colombia

In the news world, Colombia doesn’t get much airtime.  Afghanistan and Iraq make news every day, given that, say, there are wars of sorts going on in those countries.  While they no doubt deserve attention, it’s always been a mystery to me as to why we don’t hear more about Colombia,  given that it is the #1 recipient of U.S. military aid in the Western Hemisphere. Is it because there’s no war going on there in which the U.S. is involved?  I suppose it’s because there are no North Americans getting killed.  Though discussions abound on which dead bodies are newsworthy, I think this also leads to provocative questions not just about the limitations of media, but about the relationship between what we think of as dead and what we think of as war and, say, what mainstream news media present as death and war.  But we’ll leave…
