Dachau was the first Nazi concentration camp opened in Germany. It was opened at an abandoned munitions factory on March 22, 1933, just 51 days after Hitler took power. It was opened for twelve years as a concentration camp. During those twelve years, it had a recorded206,206 prisoners and 31,951 deaths.
Visiting a concentration camp has been something we felt we needed to do while living in Germany. However, whenever we were thinking of things to do over a nice weekend, something else was always more appealing. Dachau is just outside of Munich and since we already planned to take the hour drive from Garmisch to Munich to visit the zoo, we decided to give it a visit as well.
Honestly, I could sense the dread here all around me. As soon as I entered the gate that reads “Arbeit macht frei“, meaning “work liberates”, I felt this place’s tight grip around my soul…
