‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s by Truman Capote

For a story that became the basis for such an iconic film, Capote’s ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ definitely wasn’t what I was expecting. Granted, I haven’t actually seen the movie, but hearing the title and seeing that well-known image of Audrey Hepburn with her sleek black dress, dark glasses and pearls has always led me to associate the story with glamour and class. I was surprised to discover a story with much more depth and darkness – less about glamour and more about what’s beneath the face that a person can show to the world. Further proof that so much can be lost when a charming story becomes a big-hit blockbuster, even back in 1961.

The version I bought came with three more of Capote’s short stories: House of Flowers, A Diamond Guitar, and A Christmas Memory, and it wasn’t until I read all four that I began to understand the…
