The V&A have opened a gorgeous exhibition showcasing photographs taken by the legendary Cecil Beaton in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s coronation. Her Diamond Jubilee year is shaping up to include numerous events and exhibitions, but this is by far our favourite so far.
Royal subjects aside, Beaton is revered as one of the world’s best-loved photographers, whose snaps of Hollywood stars and supermodels lit up the pages of magazines during the mid-20th century.
Beaton’s first sitting with her majesty was in 1942, when she was still a princess. Their photographic relationship continued over the decades, with Beaton capturing the Queen at her glorious best on numerous occasions throughout the years.
Presenting gorgeous images of HRH as a young girl, a new monarch and a devoted mother, Beaton’s snaps are utterly priceless. A must-see.
At the V&A until 22 April 2012. Cromwell Road, SW7 2RL.
